Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is a short term therapy which is usually carried out between a therapist and service user one to one but can also be done in groups. It is a structured talking therapy where goals are set and service users do homework assignments between sessions. It is focussed on problem solving and addresses the issues that make life difficult for people in the here and now. It looks at the link between the way we think and the way we behave and helps people to identify and change unhelpful spirals of thought or patterns of behaviour which make people feel worse. It is a very practical form of therapy where the therapist and service user work together as equals.
