This event took place on 28th April 2009 at Lords Cricket Ground, St Johns Wood, London.

An overview of the event

The London Physical Activity and Mental Wellbeing Conference on 28th April 2009 was a well attended, successful event.  It was delivered in partnership with Commissioning Support for London, Sport England, Time to Change, Stand to Reason and NHS London. The event was held at the prestigious Lords Cricket Ground keeping with the theme of physical activity and sport.

The purpose of the event was to increase awareness of the benefits of physical activity on mental health and challenging the stigma and discrimination which deters people from using mainstream sporting facilities.  The conference also aimed to generate a group of people to collaborate on these issues as we approach the London Olympics in 2012.

Jonathan Ness, Founder of Stand to Reason, chaired the event and shared his own experience of mental health with the audience.

Presentations included: Green Exercise for Mental Health and Up and Running, a campaign by the Mental Health Foundation to increase the use of exercise on prescription to treat mild to moderate depression in primary care.  Delegates particularly enjoyed The Mind in Croydon “Boxercise” demonstration with former world championship boxer Duke McKenzie sparring with a service user from the project.

The event concluded with 'Networking in the Nets', an indoor cricket coaching session for delegates.
