Service Improvement

The service improvement programme supports the systematic improvement of a range of whole systems and services across London.

The service improvement includes work on Choice in Mental Health, which features:

  • targeted service improvement projects,
  • change work in acute inpatient services,
  • practice and leadership development, team development, and
  • responses to dual diagnosis of mental health problems and substance use.

Some of the policy initiatives and frameworks for this area of work include the High Impact Changes for Health and Social Care, Creating a Patient-Led NHS and New Ways of Working for Everyone.

Service improvement is at the heart of all of NIMHE’s work. In order to develop standards of practice in service improvement there are some core pieces of work that NIMHE have developed:

Ten High Impact Changes for Mental Health Services

NIMHE has produced a specific guide on the 10 High Impact Changes for mental health services. This follows the launch of the NHS Modernisation Agency’s 10 High Impact Changes for Service Improvement and Delivery in 2004.

The guide, published in June 2006, identifies the 10 areas of service improvement that have the biggest impact on service user and carer experience, service delivery, outcomes, staff and organisations. It is underpinned by evidence collated from the range of mental health services across the country throughout 2005/06.

The collection of case studies to support the 10 high impact changes for mental health services are only at the beginning and there is much work in progress.

NIMHE is continuing to collect further case studies in order to bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the field.

Core Competencies for Service Improvement

NIMHE has produced a ‘Service Improvement Competence Framework’ to enable individuals and groups to understand the competencies required to undertake service improvement activity. This is available here.

Learning In Partnership: Service Improvement Leadership For Mental Health Service Users, Carers And Service Providers (2008/2009)

Following the success of the 'Training Service Users and Carers as Service Improvement Leaders Programme, a similar course is being run in 08/09. This will help develop essential capability within the mental health sector by providing knowledge, opportunity and support to service users, carers and service providers to become service improvement leaders.

The course, which is accredited by the University Of Surrey, will take place between June 2008 and March 2009. Interviews for the course will take place at the beginning of May 2008.
