Making A Real Difference

The HASCAS Making a Real Difference Research (see PDF) was commissioned by NIMHE national and Regional NIHME Directors in June 2004. The result of the research was a report which set up a number of recommendations to that would improve the ways service user and carer involvement could inform the mental health programme.

The resulting report was fully endorsed by the NIMHE Directors and all Regional Development Centres (RDCs), including the London Development Centre.  The national task was devolved to each Development Centre was tasked with developing and delivering on the recommendations through the development of fourteen useful tools to enhance service user and carers’ contributions to the development, deliveryand evaluation of services within mental health.

The Work and “Products” (Resources to Support Involvement) Developed

As a result of the Making a Real Difference project, the systems, guidelines, policies and procedures developed in partnership with our stakeholders will enable the mental health programme to develop a systematic approach to involvement.

This will ensure that service improvement is being led by example, combining both the expertise of the RDC teams but also embracing the huge potential expertise of people using mental health services and those caring for them. A clear way forward reflecting the principles set out in the White Paper, Our Health, Our Care, Our Say - a new direction for community services; which states that “change is to be driven, not centrally, but in each community by the people who use services and by the professionals who provide them.” (Tony Blair, January 2006).
