2. Concise Guidance to Good Practice

3. Prison Reform Trust
Too Little Too Late - an independent review of unmet mental health need in prison (Kimmett Edgar and Dora Rickford)
Independent Monitoring Boards perform a vital function in prisons, monitoring fairness and respect for people in custody. Appointed by the Secretary of State for Justice, they provide an independent perspective on the treatment of prisoners and the conditions in prisons. The National Council of Independent Monitoring Boards recently analysed annual reports and identified prisoners’ unmet mental health needs as a foremost concern of boards across England and Wales.

5. Central London Samaritans
Central London Samaritans are offering a free online referral service. If you regularly come into contact with vulnerable people who might be in crisis, depressed or suicidal - set up an account and refer them to Samaritans online.
They will call the person within 24 hours - giving them access to Samaritans support. If you are interested in finding out more about this service please contact Shaun Kelly 020 7439 1406 or shaun@cls.org.uk

8. London Mental Health Commissioning Development Network

10.The Mental Capacity Act - Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Training
The Mental Capacity Act Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (formerly known as the Bournewood safeguards) were introduced into the Mental Capacity Act 2005 through the Mental Health Act 2007. The aim of the deprivation of liberty safeguards is to provide legal protection for those vulnerable people who are deprived of their liberty otherwise than under the Mental Health Act 1983, to prevent arbitrary decisions to deprive a person of liberty and to give rights to challenge deprivation of liberty authorisations.

11. Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.
- The aims of Mental Health First Aid are:to preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
- to provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state
- to promote the recovery of good mental health
- to provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.
MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

12. Mental Health and Well-Being in Later Life Dignity, Safeguarding and Dementia Programme
Living well with dementia

The first implementation workshop was held on the 25th February, which was attended by over 80 delegates. The event was oversubscribed and we know that there are many stakeholders who were disappointed they could not attend.
One of the outcomes from the workshop was that delegates wanted to be part of an e- network where good practice, information, future events and developments would be shared.

Dignity Champions the latest dignity champion workshop was held on the 17th February. The focus of the event was living well with dementia: the national dementia strategy. Theatre Adad performed a play - which was very powerful and made the delegates reflect on dignity and dementia. The discussion from this meeting will be used to inform the NDS implementation Plan. 13. One Voice: Shaping our ageing society - Tuesday 7 April 2009, London
This major policy conference will explore the issues which are shaping our ageing society. This conference will also mark the joining together of Age Concern England and Help the Aged to form a single new charity dedicated to improving the lives of older people.
Chaired by Jackie Ashley, Guardian columnist, the conference features a strong line up of expert speakers including Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP, Rt Hon James Purnell MP and Rt Hon Theresa May MP. The programme also includes discussion seminars to enable you to explore in detail the specific issues most appropriate to your work. As well as providing the latest information on a wide range of policy areas the seminars offer you a chance to debate issues with other delegates.
