1.  Short Changed:  Spending on Prison Mental Health Care

This report analyses public spending on mental health care in prisons. It compares spending between different regions, by type of prison and in comparison with spending on all types of health care in prisons and with mental health spending in the wider community.

2.  Healthcare Commission Report of Self Reported Experience of Patients from Black and Ethnic Minority Groups May 2008

This report examines variations in the self-reported views of NHS patients from different ethnic groups.  These results give us insight into the areas of NHS service provision where experience of the service looks different to patients from different ethnic groups.  Results are based on data from the National Patient Survey programme, led by the Healthcare Commission.

3.  Smokefree Mental Health Wards: A Review of Training and Preparation for Smokefree Deadline Conference 25 June 2008

The smokefree provisions of the Health Act (2006) will apply to mental health settings from 1 July. The conference will share experiences from preparations across London, focussing on staff training and smokefree policy implementation.  There will also be an open forum for staff to raise and debate issues of concern. 4.  Mental Health Awareness Training for Local NHS Stop Smoking Services 11 July 2008

This training provides NHS local stop smoking services with specialist mental health awareness training in preparation for the forthcoming 1 July smokefree deadline for mental health wards. 5.  Plans for New Consultation on Future Steps in Tobacco Control 24 June 2008

The Government plans to announce a new consultation on the future steps in Tobacco Control. This is an ideal opportunity for everyone who works or has an interest in Tobacco Control to influence Government's future priorities and policies. Smokefree London (http://www.smokefreelondon.com/) and the South East Region (click here for website) are organising a joint event, free of charge, to introduce the consultation and discuss ideas and ways forward to advocate Tobacco Control. A planning event is being held on Tuesday 24 June in Central London (near Waterloo Station).

6.  Legislation Programme Update

Mental Health Act 2007 Update

The revised Code of Practice and the secondary legislation have now been laid in Parliament. Subject to the outcome of the Parliamentary process, the bulk of the changes made to the Mental Health Act 1983 by the Mental Health Act 2007 will come into effect on Monday 3 November 2008. Forthcoming events and important dates for your diary

On the 2 April 2008 we held an event for Service Users and Carers to provide a forum for information on the changes to the Mental Health Act.  It was attended by over 100 Service Users and Carers from across London.  Our “Getting your Act Together” Train the Trainers programme is now underway and our first successful event was held on the 6/7 May 2008.  We are also hosting a newly formed BME National Advocacy Network which will run until March 2009 and will be made up of BME Advocacy representatives who attended our events in October 2007 and February 2008.

7.  Mental Health First Aid – Instructors Training and 12 Hour Training Now Available

MHFA is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained. The aims are:

  • to preserve life where a person may be in danger to themselves of others
  • to provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state
  • to promote the recovery of good mental health
  • to provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem

MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

The CPA briefing paper Supporting Parents with Mental Health Problems and their Children is now available from www.nimhe.csip.org.uk. This briefing paper accompanies the new CPA implementation guidance published in March 2008.

11.  Power to the People:  A Study Day Exploring Personalisation in Mental Health 8 July 2008 Northampton
