COMMUNITY EQUIPMENT (DISABLED CHILDREN)

One of the Government’s commitments made under Aiming High for Disabled Children is that the Department of Health work will work with DCSF and the voluntary sector to ensure that the community equipment and wheelchair services review delivers a radical overhaul of the system to meet the needs of children.

In London, the charity Whizz Kidz is working in LB Tower Hamlets piloting a partnership approach to the provision of motorised wheelchairs to disabled children. This three-year pilot initiative, launched in March 2007, is a unique partnership between the statutory services and the voluntary sector.  The charity is workign with the PCT and local authority to enhance wheelchair provision by delivering joint assessments, sharing expertise and pooling our resources to meet the individual needs of children and young people.
