NATIONAL SERVICE FRAMEWORK for CHILDREN YOUNG PEOPLE AND MATERNITY SERVICES
STANDARD 8
The National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (NSF) establishes standards for promoting the health and well-being of children and young people and for providing high quality services that meet their needs.
There are eleven standards within the NSF. Standard 8 addresses the requirements of children and young people who are disabled and/or who have complex health needs, and their families. The standard requires that:
children and young people who are disabled or who have complex health needs receive co-ordinated, high-quality child and family-centred services which are based on assessed needs, which promote social inclusion and, where possible, which enable them and their families to live ordinary lives.
Standard 8 is cross-referenced with Standard 6 , which addresses the needs of children and young people who are ill and these two Standards have been written to be read together. The care of children and young people when they are in hospital is covered in Standard 7. The mental health and psychological wellbeing of disabled children and young people, particularly those with learning disability, are addressed in Standard 9.
The Council for Disabled Children has produced an information sheet with a list of resources available to support the development of Standard 8 (which can be downloaded from the document list below).
